Buying a Phone in the US: Customs, IMEI & Tax Guide 2026

Customs duty, BTK IMEI registration, tax-free states, and real cost breakdowns: all the details of bringing a phone from America.

Quick summary: Bringing a phone from America can be cheaper than buying in Turkey, but after you add customs duty, IMEI registration, and the BTK process, the math changes. In this guide I am writing the real numbers and the step-by-step process.

Bringing a Phone From America: Basic Rules (2026)

According to Turkish customs regulations, these rules apply to phones brought from abroad:

  • 1 phone per passport: Every Turkish citizen who exits the country can bring 1 cell phone on their return
  • 120-day IMEI deadline: To use a phone brought from abroad in Turkey, you need to register the IMEI within 120 days. An unregistered phone stops working on Turkish networks after 120 days
  • Customs duty is mandatory: To use the phone, you must pay the TRT levy + fee (around ~20,000 TL for 2026)

Important: Without IMEI registration, you can use the phone in Turkey with a foreign SIM card, but only for 120 days. After that, the device gets locked on Turkish carriers. This period is enough for tourists, but if you are going to use it permanently, registration is required.

How to Register IMEI?

You can register your IMEI through e-Devlet or by going to a tax office:

  1. Log in to e-Devlet
  2. Search for "IMEI Kayit" or "Phone Registration from Abroad"
  3. Enter your phone's IMEI number (you can find it in Settings > About or by dialing *#06#)
  4. Pay the customs fee
  5. Once the process is complete, the phone becomes active on Turkish carriers

It usually takes 1-3 business days. In some cases it can activate instantly.

Customs Duty Calculation: Real Numbers

As of 2026, the fees for a phone brought from abroad:

ItemAmount (2026 Estimate)
TRT Levy~20,000 TL
e-Devlet Processing Fee~200 TL
Total IMEI Registration Cost~20,200 TL

These numbers get updated every year. Check the current amount on e-Devlet or the BTK website.

Let's Do the Math: Is It Really Cheaper?

Using the iPhone 16 Pro 256GB as an example:

ItemUSATurkey
Phone price$1,199 (~40,000 TL)~75,000 TL
State tax (0% in NH/OR)$0
IMEI registration cost~20,000 TL
Total~60,000 TL~75,000 TL
Savings~15,000 TL (20%)

So there is about 20% savings, but this is the scenario where you buy in a tax-free state. In New York or California, 8-10% state tax gets added, and savings drop to 10-15%. Still an advantage, but the "half-price phone" claim is not true.

Which Phone Should You Buy?

iPhone: Always Buy Unlocked

Buy "SIM-free / unlocked" from the Apple Store or Amazon. Carrier-locked phones (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) may look cheaper but can cause problems in Turkey.

Samsung Galaxy

Samsung phones are also cheaper in America than Turkey. But pay attention: US models use a Snapdragon processor, Turkey models use Exynos. There is a performance difference and it is generally in Snapdragon's favor.

Google Pixel

The Pixel series has no official sale in Turkey, so buying from America is the only option. The Pixel 9 Pro has excellent camera quality and high value for money.

Tax-Free States: Where to Buy?

Some states have no sales tax. For expensive products like phones, this makes a real difference:

  • Oregon: 0% tax, Apple Store in Portland
  • New Hampshire: 0% tax, Apple Store available (Pheasant Lane Mall)
  • Montana: 0% tax, but no Apple Store
  • Delaware: 0% tax, Apple Store available
  • Alaska: No state tax but some municipalities may have local tax

On a $1,200 phone, 8% tax = $96 extra cost. You save that money by buying in a tax-free state.

Where to Buy?

  • Apple Store (physical store): Most reliable, guaranteed unlocked, easy returns
  • Apple Online Store: Same price, delivered to your door
  • Amazon: Sometimes discounted, fast shipping for Prime members. But check the seller. Select ones "Sold by Amazon.com"
  • Best Buy: Carrier-locked models are cheaper but unlocked options exist too
  • Swappa / eBay: Used phones. There is risk but big savings. Always check the IMEI

Phone Accessories

When you buy a phone, also get accessories. Cases, charging cables, and power banks are more expensive in Turkey:

Things to Watch Out For

  • Warranty: A phone bought in the US may have limited Apple warranty in Turkey. AppleCare+ has global coverage but local service centers may work differently
  • Keep the receipt: Customs may ask for it. Make sure to keep your electronic or paper receipt
  • Multiple phones: The rule is 1 phone per passport. Trying to bring 2 phones will cause problems at customs
  • Gift phone: A phone bought for someone else is subject to the same rules. You need to register it with your own passport

Notice: The customs information in this article is a general guide for 2026. Customs regulations can change. Check the Ministry of Trade and BTK websites for current information.
