iPhone Prices in the US 2026: How Much, Where to Buy, and How

Buying an iPhone in the US saves you serious money compared to Turkey. Right state, unlocked choice, and BTK IMEI registration: I told it like it is.

Quick summary: iPhones in America are significantly cheaper than in Turkey, thanks to both tax policies and Apple's direct pricing. If you buy from the right state, unlocked, and from the right seller, the difference is striking. But if you are taking it to Turkey, you also need to account for the BTK IMEI registration requirement.

Shortcut: Most reliable place for unlocked iPhone → Amazon Apple Store: All iPhone Models → or directly Apple.com. Stay away from carrier stores, I explained why below.

Why Is the Difference So Big?

For years, friends coming from Canakkale would text me "buy an iPhone and bring it." Understandable. The difference is genuinely huge. In Turkey, import taxes, special consumption tax, and VAT stack up, and the same iPhone ends up nearly two to three times the price. In America, Apple sets its own retail price directly, and only sales tax gets added on top depending on the state. Nothing else.

There is also this: Apple's Turkey prices change constantly with currency fluctuations. When you compare on a dollar basis, the gap grows year after year. I came here as an au pair, and the first time I saw an Apple Store, my calculator got exhausted looking at the price tags.

2026 iPhone Pricing Structure

Apple releases the new iPhone series every September. The pricing logic has not changed much over the years. The general pattern looks like this:

Model TypeStarting PriceStorageWho Is It For
iPhone (standard)~$799From 128GBDaily use, budget-conscious
iPhone Plus~$899From 128GBBig screen, long battery seekers
iPhone Pro~$999From 128GBCamera, ProMotion, titanium body
iPhone Pro Max~$1,199From 256GBBest camera, biggest screen

For current model and exact prices: Since Apple prices update when models change, check apple.com/shop. When a new model comes out, the previous generation usually drops $100-200 in price, and that option is very sensible.

Real Price Difference with Turkey

Calculate the exchange rate yourself but here is the picture: an iPhone you buy for ~$799 in America easily costs over 50,000-60,000 TL in Turkey. Even as of this writing, that difference alone makes buying in America and bringing it to Turkey worthwhile, as long as you sort out the IMEI issue of course.

If a friend wants to carry one back, calculate it for them too: without shipping, customs, or insurance, if you are physically carrying the phone, there is still significant savings.

Where Should You Buy?

Apple Store (Physical or Apple.com)

The most reliable option. Especially if it is your first time, go directly to the Apple Store. Trade-in option, full warranty, easy return policy, everything is there. If there is no Apple Store in your city, you can order through apple.com/shop and it comes to your door.

Amazon

Unlocked iPhones are also sold on Amazon. Price is usually the same as Apple but you might see small discounts or bundle deals from time to time. Important: always check for "Sold by Apple" or "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com." Buying a "like new" iPhone from third-party sellers carries risk, warranty issues can come up.

Amazon Apple Store: All Apple Products →

Carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon)

Looks tempting but requires caution. Promotions like "free iPhone" or "$400 off" actually come with a 24-36 month plan commitment. The phone comes locked to a specific carrier. If you want to use it in Turkey or another country, it will not work. Buying from a carrier store only makes sense if you are staying in America for a long time, and even then, read the terms carefully.

Best Buy, Costco

If there is no Apple Store nearby, Best Buy is a good alternative. Usually the same price, but with a MyBestBuy membership you can occasionally get extra discounts or gift cards. Costco sometimes offers serious bundle deals but the phones are mostly carrier-tied, so be careful.

States with Zero Sales Tax

Sales tax in America is state-based, not federal. Five states have zero:

  • Oregon
  • New Hampshire
  • Montana
  • Delaware
  • Alaska (no state tax but some cities may have local tax)

For a ~$999 iPhone, average 8-9% sales tax means about $80-90. If you can plan ahead, that difference is not something to ignore. I lived in New Hampshire for a while. People there would cross from Massachusetts or Vermont specifically to buy big electronics. They are right to do so.

Tax on online orders: When you order from Apple.com, the tax of the state where your delivery address is located applies. If you have an address in a tax-advantaged state, you can ship it there.

Unlocked or Carrier-Locked?

This is the most critical question for those taking it to Turkey. A carrier-locked iPhone only works with the SIM of the carrier you bought it from. If you put in a Turkish SIM, the phone will not work.

Cleanest way to buy unlocked: Pay full price from Apple Store or Apple.com. Every iPhone you buy at full price from Apple comes unlocked, no conditions.

If you bought from a carrier: AT&T and T-Mobile require the phone to be fully paid off and a certain period of service. Verizon mostly sells iPhones unlocked but confirm at purchase.

To check: In iPhone Settings > General > About, if it says "Carrier Lock: No SIM Restrictions," the phone is unlocked. Do not carry it to Turkey without confirming this shows up.

If You Are Taking It to Turkey: BTK IMEI Registration

Let me be honest about this, both the parts I know and the parts I am not sure about.

In Turkey, phones brought from foreign countries need to be registered with the BTK system. What is generally known:

  • After a certain period from entry into Turkey (around 120 days based on recent info, but this changes), an unregistered phone can lose access to the carrier network.
  • Passport and customs/declaration documents are needed for registration.
  • Bringing more than one phone per year is subject to customs tax.

Important: BTK and customs rules change, and they may change after this article was written too. For definitive and current information, check btk.gov.tr and the Ministry of Trade customs regulations. A wrong step can cost you both money and big headaches. It is worth making a couple of extra searches.

Which Storage Should You Choose?

Apple charges a lot for storage upgrades. Quick guide:

  • 128GB: For minimal apps, cloud-heavy usage. Turns out to be not enough for most people. Photos, podcasts, offline music add up fast.
  • 256GB: The sweet spot for the average user. Comfortable for a few years.
  • 512GB: For people who shoot video, keep offline content, and do not want to worry about storage.
  • 1TB: Truly professional-level need. Most people do not use this much.

Summary: Who Should Buy How?

  • You live in America: Apple Store or Amazon, unlocked. If you are in a low-tax state, buy there. No hesitation.
  • You are visiting from Turkey, buying for yourself: Buy unlocked, prepare for BTK registration. You are still saving serious money.
  • You are bringing one for someone in Turkey: Watch the customs limit, confirm it is unlocked, show them the iPhone price comparison. They will thank you.
  • A carrier deal looks tempting: Might make sense if you are staying in America long-term. If you are taking it to Turkey, absolutely no.
