Headphone Guide: I Tested Everything from $30 to $550

I tried 7 different wireless headphones in 3 months. Which should you buy for your budget? Spoiler: the most expensive one isn't the best.

Quick summary: I tested 7 headphones in 3 months. In this guide, I go through the best option for every budget, which ones you should avoid, and why Soundcore Q20i performs way above its price.

Quick pick: Budget limited → Soundcore Q20i (~$40) →  |  Best ANC → Sony WH-1000XM5 (~$280) →

Budget Categories: What to Buy When?

The price-to-performance equation in the headphone market is very different. A $40 headphone can offer 70% of the quality of a $200 one, while going from $200 to $400 might give you very little gain.

BudgetRecommendationWhat to Expect?
$30-50Soundcore Q20iANC, 40-hour battery, great sound. Way beyond the budget
$80-120Sony WH-CH720NLighter, better ANC, Sony sound
$200-300Sony WH-1000XM5Best ANC on the market, premium sound quality
$200-300Bose QC UltraSony's closest rival, excellent comfort, equal on iOS and Android

Soundcore Q20i: ANC Headphones for $40, Honest Review

These headphones genuinely surprised me. At $39.99 they offer active noise cancellation, 40-hour battery life, and good sound quality. Over 56,000 reviews on Amazon with 4.6/5 stars. Hard to see those numbers as fake or inflated.

The Good

  • ANC actually works: With 2 internal + 2 external microphones, it cuts about 90% of ambient noise. Makes a meaningful difference at the coffee shop, on the subway, on a plane. At $40, this is something else.
  • 40-hour battery (ANC on): No charging anxiety on flights. With ANC off it goes up to 60 hours. 5 minutes of charging gives 4 hours of use.
  • Dual device connection: Can stay connected to both computer and phone at the same time, automatically switches between them. This feature is usually found on $100+ headphones.
  • Soundcore app: 22 EQ presets, white noise modes, bass boost. Can be customized to your personal sound preferences.
  • Hi-Res Audio certified: High-resolution audio support when used with AUX cable.

Things to Watch Out For

  • ANC limitations: Cannot be compared to Sony WH-1000XM5 or Bose QuietComfort. But expecting that at $40 would be unfair. On a plane you still hear some jet noise, but it blocks office noise well.
  • No Bluetooth Hi-Res: Hi-Res Audio only works with cable. Standard sound quality over Bluetooth. Still good, but the way it is advertised can be misleading.
  • Long-term comfort: Ear cushions trap a bit of heat. On long flights you might need to take them off occasionally. The headband might feel tight for some people.
  • Microphone quality: Call quality is average. If you are on calls frequently, this could be a problem.

Who is it for? Students, people who listen to music on planes, those who want to work in open offices, and anyone buying their first ANC headphone. If you cannot afford Sony or Bose, these headphones make sense.

Sony WH-1000XM5: The Market's Reference Point

If your budget allows it, the WH-1000XM5 is still the best ANC headphone on the market. 8 microphones, industry-leading noise cancellation, 30-hour battery, and Sony's reference sound.

  • The good: Best ANC, foldable design, very good microphone quality (suitable for calls too), hi-res wireless audio with LDAC.
  • Watch out: Does not fold. Will not fit in a small bag. $280-350 price range. ANC does not work in wired mode.

Sony WH-1000XM6: The New Generation Is Here

Sony released the WH-1000XM6 in 2025. What did they add on top of XM5?

  • ANC improved another notch. Moved to dual processor architecture
  • Foldable design is back (XM5 did not fold, that was a big drawback)
  • Bluetooth 5.3 and upgraded microphone array
  • Battery: 30 hours (ANC on), same as XM5

If you already own XM5, upgrade is not mandatory. If you are buying new, XM6 is the smarter choice.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra: Sony's Real Rival

Bose QC Ultra is the most reliable alternative that competes with the Sony XM series every generation. ANC quality is very close to Sony, and comfort for long use might be even better (the cushioning around the ear feels softer on the Bose).

  • Bose Immersive Audio (spatial audio feature)
  • 24-hour battery + fast charging (15 min charge gives 2.5 hours)
  • Equal performance with iPhone and Android (no ecosystem dependency like Sony)

Apple AirPods Max: Makes Sense for the Ecosystem, Not Outside

The $549 AirPods Max does not beat Sony or Bose on sound quality. But if you use the iPhone/iPad/Mac ecosystem, Spatial Audio, Transparency Mode, and automatic device switching deliver a truly top-tier experience.

  • The good: Flawless integration with Apple ecosystem, premium build quality from aluminum and woven fabric, Spatial Audio.
  • Watch out: Many features do not work on Android. Only makes sense price-wise for Apple users. Carrying case needs to be bought separately.

If you are an Android user: AirPods Max's most valuable features (automatic device switching, Spatial Audio, Transparency Mode, head tracking) only work on Apple devices. If you use them with an Android phone, you are buying a $549 Bluetooth headphone. Sony WH-1000XM5 is a much smarter choice in that scenario.

Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro: Android's Best

If you do not use iPhone and want ANC earbuds, Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro is a serious option. Bixby AI voice control, ANC quality comparable to AirPods Pro, and deep integration with Samsung phones.

  • Blade-type (open tip) design. Comfortable rather than a tight canal seal
  • 360 Audio for spatial sound
  • 6 hours + 18 hours total battery (Galaxy AI with live translation feature available)
  • Recommended for Android phone users. Works with iPhone but features are limited

Which Headphone Fits You?

ProfileRecommendationWhy?
Student / limited budgetSoundcore Q20iYou will not find these features at $40 anywhere else
Frequent flyerSony WH-1000XM5Best ANC, most comfortable long flight experience
iPhone + Mac userAirPods MaxEcosystem features you cannot get elsewhere
Mid budget, good soundSony WH-CH720NLight, good ANC, Sony quality ~$100
Sports / active useSoundcore Sport categoryOver-ear not suitable for this type

Final verdict: If you want ANC headphones for $40, Soundcore Q20i is the best pick. Sony WH-CH720N sits well in the middle. Is ANC quality the most important thing and budget allows? Get the WH-1000XM5. In the Apple ecosystem? AirPods Max. For comfort, Bose QC45 is still very good.
