When I first came to America as a Turkish person, the difference between Walmart and Target was not clear to me. Both are big stores. Both have everything. Why would one be better?
For six months I went to both with the same shopping list. I took notes, compared prices. Here are my results.
Price: Walmart Wins, But Not Always
Walmart's price advantage is real, but inconsistent. In some categories there is a serious difference:
- Groceries: Walmart is generally 10-15% cheaper for big brands
- Electronics: Almost equal, sometimes Walmart is slightly cheaper
- Clothing: Target charges more for better quality. Walmart is cheaper but the quality is different too
- Home decor: Target is clearly the better selection, and the price reflects that
But be careful: Walmart's price tag is lower, but by the time you factor in the drive and gas cost, that difference can shrink.
Product Range: Who Is It For?
Target's customer profile is different from Walmart. Target is more of an "aspirational" store. Well-designed products, private labels (see Cat & Jack kids clothing, Good & Gather food brand), aesthetic shelf layout. Walmart is pragmatic: cheapest, biggest, most practical.
When I explain it to people back in Turkey, I say it like this: if Walmart is like a cheap hypermarket in a crowded shopping center, Target is a slightly more polished, slightly cleaner upper-middle store. Not exactly, but close enough.
Rankings: Which Store for Which Category?
- Bulk grocery shopping (flour, sugar, canned goods)
- Cheap electronics (cables, batteries, small accessories)
- Cleaning products (detergent, paper towels) in large sizes
- Car supplies (Walmart has an automotive section)
- Clothing (especially kids and women)
- Home decor and affordable home textiles
- Cosmetics and personal care products (wider selection)
- Books, toys, gift items
- Organic / "better-for-you" grocery options
Target Circle vs. Walmart+
The membership programs are different. Target Circle is free, gives you basic discounts and points. Walmart+ is $98 per year (or monthly), but it includes free shipping, Paramount+ membership, and gas discounts. When you think about household needs, Walmart+ can pay for itself. Target Circle is in the "what am I losing, it is free" category.

Distance and Accessibility
In big American cities, both are everywhere. But in small towns and rural areas, Walmart is much more common. When I was living in New Hampshire this was very real. The nearest Walmart was 15 minutes, Target was 40 minutes. Sometimes the choice is geographic.
General Impression: It Is Personal Though
I use Walmart to go fill a cart. I go to Target to spend time. I walk in not knowing what I want and walk out having bought something. This is not an apology, it is an observation.
If you are watching your spending: going into Target "just for one thing" is dangerous. At Walmart this happens less because the aesthetics are not that inviting. That is actually a difference too.
Conclusion
My preference: big grocery runs and bulk products at Walmart, clothing and home goods at Target. If I had a car I would sign up for both memberships, otherwise I would just go to whichever is closer.
And yes, both are bigger, cheaper, and have wider selection than many supermarket chains in Turkey. This is truly something you need to learn: "how shopping works over here."
